Graduate training is one of the easiest ways for fresh graduates to find employment, and with so much competition out there, it is important to produce an outstanding resume.

Most recruiters for graduate trainee positions are seeking candidates with strong academic records, looking less at formal experience and more at core competencies.

It is advisable to submit a well-organized CV as companies in Nigeria such as First Bank, Dufil Foods, and Ernst & Young are currently enrolling graduates in their training programs. This will increase your chances of progressing to the next stage of evaluation, which typically involves an aptitude test.

In this article, we explore tips on how to write an effective graduate trainee resume and provide a template and example resume.

How to Write a CV for a Graduate Trainee?

Employers recruiting for graduate trainees don’t expect candidates to have core experience, but you must have soft skills, which could be learned during your academic and service years.

When structuring your CV, It’s important to establish a pattern of strength, like when you achieve first-class or second-class upper results in your academics, it’s okay to put your education section above the experience section. If you did not excel academically, showcasing the skills you have acquired that set you apart from other candidates is crucial.

The following are the most important sections that you should include on your graduate trainee.

1. Contact Information: Name, Address, Phone, Email. Be sure to include alternative contact channels, such as your LinkedIn profile.

On the subject of email address, create a professional one on Gmail or Yahoo mail, don’t use an unprofessional email like dannyrichie@gmail.com.

2. Career Objective: Write your resume objective according to the specific job you are applying for. For example, indicate the skills they included in the job description that you process.  You can also mention any relevant internships or work experience you have. Don’t let your summary be more than 3 sentences.

3. Education/Qualification: You can put your education at the top under your summary, if you feel that this is the most significant. Provide accurate details about your certifications and qualifications with the institution, qualification name, and dates. Don’t forget to include qualifications you are currently completing too.

4. Relevant Experience: Clearly state your previous experience such as internships, PPA, business, and volunteer roles. Use brief sentences with bullet points to list your most important daily activities under each role you have had. Work experience must start with your most recent job at the top and the oldest at the bottom.

5. Key Skills: Incorporates keywords from the job posting and your specific skill set. This adds much-needed credibility to your resume. Also, writing a job posting keyword allows your resume to pass ATS.

6. Professional Courses: As you would normally have no core working experience which required working in a particular position and so forth you can perhaps provide courses you have done while completing your degree. Examples include computer courses, bookkeeping courses, social media mastery or any self-taught training via online course platforms like Udemy.
